The Carbon Ranch

Welcome to The Carbon Ranch Project

We’re learning how to turn cattle ranches back into thriving natural ecosystems.

The Carbon Ranch Project is a groundbreaking initiative to experimentally evaluate innovative, economically viable strategies for sequestering carbon on a massive scale by restoring native ecosystems on land previously used for beef cattle ranching.

Our flagship site, Carbon Ranch One, is a 1,040-acre pilot project located near Emmet, Arkansas. Three years ago, it was a ranch with nearly 800 cattle. Today the site is a living laboratory where we're rigorously evaluating multiple approaches to ecosystem restoration, while measuring carbon capture and recovery of native plant, animal and microbial populations.

Launched in 2022, our experiment seeks to:

●      Quantitatively measure the environmental impact and cost-effectiveness of transitioning from cattle grazing to ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration.

●      Develop scalable, affordable tools and methods for monitoring carbon capture and recovery of native wildlife and plant populations.

●      Share our findings transparently to empower today’s ranchers to transition to

Discover why moving from cattle ranching to carbon ranching matters—and how it benefits farmers, wildlife, and our planet.

Learn about our mission, how we designed the experiment, how we track carbon sequestration as the ecosystem recovers, meet the birds and other wildlife, and tracking our progress.
